What data CheckIP collects
CheckIP collects the technical data your browser sends with every request and the values you type into our tools. We do not collect data from other sources to build a profile of you.
Data collected automatically
- Your public IP address (IPv4 and, if available, IPv6).
- Browser and device details sent in request headers, such as user agent, language and screen size.
- Request data: the page you open, the time of the request and the referring page.
- Location and ISP details that we derive from your IP address through GeoIP databases. These are approximate and never more precise than city level.
Data you enter into a tool
- IP addresses, domains and hostnames you look up, ping or check against blocklists.
- Port numbers you test with the port scan tool.
- Proxy lists you paste into the proxy checker, which may include proxy usernames and passwords.
- Speed test results, such as download speed, upload speed, ping and jitter.
Data you send us
If you email us, we receive your email address, your message and any attachments you choose to send.
How we use your data
We use your data to run the tool you asked for, keep the service secure and fix problems. Each use has a legal basis under the GDPR and a stated purpose under Vietnamese law.
- Showing your IP address and connection details, and running the lookups you request. This is necessary to provide the service you asked for.
- Protecting the service against abuse, such as automated scraping, denial of service attempts and unauthorized scanning. This is our legitimate interest in keeping CheckIP available.
- Measuring load and fixing errors from aggregated request logs. This is our legitimate interest in running a working service.
- Answering your emails. This is necessary to respond to your request.
We do not use your data for automated decisions that have legal or similar effects on you. We do not sell, rent or trade personal data.
How long we keep data
We keep personal data only as long as each purpose needs it. Lookup queries are processed to return a result and are not stored in a history linked to you. Proxy lists pasted into the proxy checker are processed in memory to run the test and are deleted when the test ends. Server access logs, which contain IP addresses, are kept for up to 30 days for security and troubleshooting and then deleted. Emails are kept for up to 24 months after the conversation ends, unless the law requires a longer period.
Cookies and local storage
CheckIP does not use advertising cookies or cross-site tracking. The site uses only the cookies and browser storage needed for it to work, such as remembering your language choice, and security cookies set by our network provider Cloudflare to filter malicious traffic. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, but some features may stop working. If we add analytics or advertising in the future, we will update this policy and, where the law requires it, ask for your consent first.
Who we share data with
We share data only with service providers that help us run CheckIP, and only the data each one needs.
- Cloudflare, Inc. delivers the website and filters attacks. Every request to checkip.day passes through Cloudflare's network.
- GeoIP data providers IPinfo, MaxMind, IP2Location, IPGeolocation.io and DB-IP receive the IP address being looked up when a lookup uses their online service.
- OpenStreetMap tile servers deliver the map images shown with lookup results. Your browser requests these tiles directly, so the tile server receives your IP address.
- Public DNS blocklist operators receive the IP address you check when you use the blacklist tool.
- Hosts, websites and proxies you test receive connections from our servers, not from your device.
We may also disclose data when Vietnamese law or a competent authority requires it, or to protect the rights and safety of our users and our service.
International data transfers
CheckIP is operated from Vietnam, and some of our providers process data on servers in other countries, including the United States and member states of the European Union. When we transfer personal data across borders, we follow the procedures set by Vietnam's Law on Personal Data Protection and its guiding decree. For data from the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, we rely on the safeguards the GDPR allows, such as standard contractual clauses offered by our providers.
How we protect your data
All traffic between your browser and checkip.day is encrypted with HTTPS (TLS). Access to our servers and logs is limited to staff who need it to run the service. We keep as little personal data as possible, because data we do not store cannot leak. If a personal data breach affects you, we will notify you and the competent authorities as the law requires.
Your privacy rights
You have the right to know how your personal data is processed, to access it, to correct it, to ask us to delete it, to restrict or object to its processing and to withdraw consent you have given. Under Vietnamese law you also have the right to complain and to claim compensation for damage caused by a violation. Visitors in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom may also lodge a complaint with their local data protection authority.
To use any of these rights, email [email protected] with the subject "Privacy request" and tell us which right you want to use. Because we do not have accounts, we may ask for the IP address and approximate date of your visit to find the related records. We reply within 30 days.
Children's privacy
CheckIP is a general audience service and is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal data by email, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We update this privacy policy when our tools or data practices change. The date at the top of the page shows the latest version. If a change affects how we use personal data you have already given us, we will post a notice on the site before it takes effect.
This privacy policy is published in English and Vietnamese (Vietnamese version). If the two versions differ, the Vietnamese version applies.
